In the aftermath of most storms there is still a bit of life, even if it’s just people rebuilding their houses and cleaning up debris. Unfortunately for the Common Linnets, the acoustic version of their song “Calm After the Storm” is totally devoid of any form of life. There’s no energy, no vigor, and, after listening to the debut on March 12, we seriously wanted to check if the artists still had a pulse. Thankfully Ilse DeLange and Waylon have now revealed the final version of their Eurovision entry. It has calmed us down and undone much of the horror of the acoustic version. Today’s release shows the song to be more subtle than boring, and the backing makes the singers’ imagined heartache more believable. It continues the trend of country music at Eurovision 2014—hello Malta, haaaay Switzerland. But this number seems slightly more sophisticated than those two. It takes cues from Crosby, Stills & Nash, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, and feels more organic to Nashville, where it was recorded. Anouk did well with understated last year, so perhaps Ilse and Waylon can have similar success?
